Manipulating monoamines reduces exploration and boldness of Mediterranean field crickets

چکیده
• We studied if monoamines underly variation in animal personality, crickets. Our monoamine manipulation via Fluphenazine lowered both boldness and exploration. show that effects can be dose- behaviour-dependent. Latency to emerge from shelter used as a measure of Behavioural results depend on the drug used. Despite prevalence research interest its underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Due essential role modulating behaviour, we manipulated monoaminergic systems Mediterranean field crickets ( Gryllus bimaculatus ) explore whether this altered behavioural responses commonly describe personality. Previous work has shown serotonin dopamine manipulations alter cricket although differ depending focus. Here, investigate effect Fluphenazine, antagonist which also interacts with receptors, activity, exploration, boldness, aggression. These compared those our earlier investigated drugs more specifically target or (Fluoxetine Ropinirole, respectively). limited dose-effects created dose-response curves concentrations ranging measured surface waters up human therapeutic doses. control animals, resulted lower levels exploration but did affect activity nor The explorative behaviour contradicts previous manipulations. together confirm causal explaining often Further, suggest assigned dopaminergic system, may at least partly explained by serotonergic system. Thus, future studies should continue explicit roles specific variation.

Boldness in anti-predator behaviour and immune defence in field crickets
Questions: Are prey animals’ behavioural responses against predation associated with their ability to resist parasites and pathogens, and if so, how is this adjusted in different populations? Methods: We studied the association between anti-predator behaviour and immune defence (encapsulation response and lytic activities of the haemolymph) using laboratory-reared male field crickets originatin...
متن کاملExplaining leptokurtic movement distributions: intrapopulation variation in boldness and exploration.
Leptokurtic distributions of movement distances observed in field-release studies, in which some individuals move long distances while most remain at or near their release point, are a common feature of mobile animals. However, because leptokurtosis is predicted to be transient in homogeneous populations, persistent leptokurtosis suggests a population heterogeneity. We found evidence for a hete...
متن کاملSexual selection and speciation in field crickets.
Recent theoretical work has shown that sexual selection may cause speciation under a much wider range of conditions than previously supposed. There are, however, no empirical studies capable of simultaneously evaluating several key predictions that contrast this with other speciation models. We present data on male pulse rates and female phonotactic responses to pulse rates for the field cricke...
متن کاملDiet, sex, and death in field crickets
Senescence is shaped by age-dependent trade-offs between fitness components. Because males and females invest different resources in reproduction, the trade-offs behind age-dependent reproductive effort should be resolved differently in the sexes. In this study, we assess the effects of diet (high carbohydrate and low protein vs. equal carbohydrate and protein) and mating (once mated vs. virgin...
متن کاملsimulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water
abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
